Books I’ve Read In February

So I may or may not have ignored most of my tbr list this month…

The Nest by Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeney || 1/5

Sometimes a small change could make all the difference.

The Plumb family is so dysfunctional and their actions so entitled and selfish, I was left bewildered. However, I feel that this book relied too heavily on cliches, which made it less captivating. There were too many chapters solely focussed on minor characters, making the book feel like a collection of short stories rather than one novel. Overall the story felt very disjointed and not overly compelling.

The Friend Scheme by Cale Dietrich || 1/5

I never wanted to be a criminal.

It had the forbidden-love trope, secrets, betrayal, some organized crime, and a Romeo and Juliet spin; great potential, but a lacklustre finish. The conflicts never seemed to carry any actual importance, the dialogue felt forced (especially between the main couple), and I just really didn’t like the writing style. Overall I found it dry and tedious.

They Both Die At The End by Adam Silvera || 5/5

I would’ve loved you if we had more time.

Crying, screaming, sobbing, sliding down the floor hysterically as tears rapidly blur my vision. This story is not a story about two boys dying, but rather their journey to live in the face of death; to know of their inevitable demise, yet choosing to love and hope and laugh regardless. This is a heartbreaking story and I absolutely don’t regret reading it; I loved every minute.

For The Wolf by Hannah Whittmen || 3.5/5

A forest in your bones, a graveyard beneath your feet. There are no heroes here.

Information is revealed a bit slowly, and the dual-pov is sometimes frustrating, but it’s all worth it in the end. The characters are all very interesting, and their relationships are dynamic and complex (especially when considering outside factors like their knowledge and belief systems). The world-building, while a tad confusing at first, is written very well overall. And omg the parallels everywhere, it was so rewarding to keep finding them!! I loved the way the author told this story, the writing style works very well with the material.

She Drives Me Crazy by || 3.5/5

“I hate you,” I say. Then I kiss her and kiss her and kiss her.

A well written teen drama to distract myself from the horrors. Whatever was going on between the main character, Scottie, and her ex-girlfriend, Tally, was annoying, but understandably so; it was a very toxic relationship, one which Scottie learns to successfully navigate through. I like that Scottie isn’t likeable sometimes, and tries to be a better person. The characters are more three dimensional than I expected from a lighthearted rom-com. Also, Irene and Scottie are literally so cute together?! This is just such a fun read!

He does! He brags about Timmy's success to every person within the neighborhood's vicinity. Mr. Turner loves how successful his son is! It really secures his reputation at the neighborhood HOA meetings they host at their house.

Timmy's worked very hard to gain more successes than failures. The more successful he is, the greater his family's social standing!! And the less he gets to overhear his dad ranting to the neighborhood about his failures.

meanwhile, right when ray is finally getting to receive the type of affection from mew he's yearned for ages - ray's not dressed the way he usually does for nights out.

in fact if i didn't know any better, i might even say he's dressed up in an outfit that's awfully reminiscent of a style a certain someone picked out just for him:

what a coincidence, that right when mew's external appearance finally seems to imply he's ready to be on the same page as ray...........ray's external appearance has shifted to reflect the lingering influence of someone new.

Crossover ship of Mitsuri and Sanji cause why not

I imagine a modern sort of AU with these two in the spotlights:

Mitsuri traveling away from Kimetsu town after tragically lost her boyfriend of years Obanai due to an incident involving his family (murder mystery maybe). Taking Kaburamaru with her, she stays in the Grand City, working as an art teacher in the New World Academy.

In the midst of her grief, she finds comfort in a cafe where the chef is nice enough to cook her enormous amount of food without any complaints every time she comes over.

Or maybe it's the chef himself.

(Mitsuri and Sanji are going to start off as friends and then close friends and it'd take a very long time for them to be together because one is afraid that she'd forgot her late boyfriend if she moved on, and another doesn't want to take advantage of the poor girl and he's unsure if he's worth enough to be with her)
